What Is
a film engine?
A film engine is a category of real-time computer software designed specifically for filmmaking,
animation, and visual effects. Unlike game engines, which were originally created to
power interactive gameplay, a film engine is optimized for cinematic storytelling,
high-quality rendering, and production workflows unique to film.
Film engines allow directors, animators, and visual effects professionals to create,
edit, and render complex sequences in real time. This approach reduces the need for lengthy
offline rendering and makes it possible to preview, adjust, and finalize shots interactively during production.

Quality and Workflow: The Univah Advantage
Instead of trying to replicate the offline render quality of traditional software (like Arnold or V-Ray, which are considered the ultimate benchmark for quality but are notoriously slow), Univah Pro is focused on achieving “production-ready” or “Arnold-level” quality in real time, directly in the viewport.

In the past you had to choose between speed or quality, with Univah you get production quality renders INSTANTLY! We don’t use any AI Technology in Univah Pro! Univah was built in the age of AI for those who want better than AI.
Origin of the Term
The term film engine was introduced by Stephanie Iketuonye Michaels, creator of Univah Pro, to describe a new type of creative software not adequately defined by existing categories like “game engine” or “3D suite.”
While developers focused on building game engines for interactivity, Univah Pro was built from the ground up for cinematic work. By naming this category, Univah Pro became recognized as the world’s first film engine.

Use Cases – Real-Time Product Design
How a Film Engine Differs from a Game Engine
Purpose:
- Game engine: designed for interactivity and player control.
- Film engine: designed for cinematic storytelling and filmmaking workflows.
Rendering:
- Game engine: balances visual fidelity with performance for gameplay.
- Film engine: prioritizes cinematic quality, lighting, and real-time rendering for shots.
Workflow:
- Game engine: level design, physics, player input, multiplayer networking.
- Film engine: procedural animation, camera tools, compositing, and film-focused effects.
Univah Pro: The First Film Engine
Univah Pro is the first software platform to define and embody the concept of a film engine. It introduces a proprietary technology stack that enables real-time filmmaking, motion graphics, and visual effects in a way that traditional game engines or 3D applications were not originally designed to do.
